Scope of Practice Issues

• Recommendation and/or clarification of procedures for EMTs transporting patients with infused blood. 

  DECISION: It is within the scope of practice, send letter to providers.

• Request for approval expanding scope of practice for EMT-Basic to include Combitube. Recommendations from Clinical Care Subcommittee.

DECISION:  Approved for use by EMT-Basics.  Referred to the Bureau for education requirements.

• Baton Rouge EMS has requested recommendation and/or advice to Parish Medical Society for EMT-Paramedic to start a saline lock for IV Access without medical control.

DECISION: Commission is in agreement however it is within the local/Parish medical society to approve.  Send letter to LSMS stating recommendations.

• Request for approval of Intraosseous Device – EZ IO in adult patients.  The Commission has approved the FAST and BIG Bone Injector, however question presented is that the scope of practice allows for IO in long bone, the FAST system is in the sternum.

DECISION:  FDA approved device, applied in long bone according to curriculum may be used.

• Request approval of the use of Quik Clot by EMTs.

DECISION: Approved

• Approval of Mark I injectors for the use by EMTs.

 Decision: Approved for self-injected only at all EMT levels.

                                    Supraglottic Disposable Airway Devices.
